Trying to decide where to go on vacation? Been dreaming of going to France someday, but you’re not too sure because you don’t know the language? Are you hesitant because you’ve heard that “the French don’t like Americans”? Does France just seem to be a distant dream?

Take heart! France is an absolutely wonderful destination filled with lovely people! Of course this is coming from a gal that loves all things French, but one’s attitude and presumptions impact their experiences exponentially and I hope to inspire you to overcome your hesitations and make your dream a reality! France is a must in my opinion.

So what’s a person to do who has never been to France and doesn’t speak French? Take heart, my friend! I’ll share some super easy tips to help you prepare for what to expect for a Newbie.
Tip #1
Be polite. Hello, Mr. Obvious! We should ALWAYS be polite, right? Seriously though, it is very polite (and expected) for shoppers to greet the shop owner/worker upon entering and exiting their establishment. Always greet with a, “Bonjour, Madame / Bonjour, Monsieur” and a smile.
I came across this image a while back and is so fitting for my tip!

“Un café” (“A coffee”) – 7€
“Un café, s’il vous plaît” (“A coffee, please”) – 4,25€
“Bonjour, un café, s’il vous plaît” (Hello, a coffee, please”) – 1,40€
{Bonus: You’ll also notice, as in the sign above, that Europeans use a comma where we use a period, and vise versa when writing numbers.}
I cannot express how appreciative they are to be recognized and greeted with a smile. I once had an expat explain it to me like this – think of it as if you’re entering their living room. You’d greet them with a smile and a friendly “Hello” at a minimum, right? You wouldn’t just barge in their front door, head to the fridge, grab a bite to eat and a drink, then plop down on their couch, would you? (Ok, maybe if it’s your parents’ house, but not someone you don’t know)! LOL.
The French are very proud of their spaces and just want it to be respected, and rightfully so. (Bonus tip – Never just start handling items to look at in a boutique without first asking! This is frowned upon BIG TIME)!
It’s a simple but very important gesture that will take you a loooooong way in France (or anywhere for that matter).
Tip #2
Take your time when dining! Sharing meals is pretty much ritualistic to the French. Having a meal with friends, family, colleagues is more than just ingesting food because you’re hungry – it’s a social event.

Yes, French food is FANTASTIC, but it is also a very important part of life. French cuisine is among the most popular in the world and known for its delectable, savory flavors smothered in rich sauces that send your tastebuds to the Heavens – however, sharing these delicious meals with family and friends is the most important part! So, take your time, enjoy your company, and sip the good wine! It’s the joie de vivre!
Tip #3
Educate yourself a wee bit before your travels. This goes for any destination that you’re not native to or don’t speak their language – not just France. Learn just a few basic words such as greetings, where to find a certain place, what the time is, etcetera.
- Hello – Bonjour
- Good bye – Au revoir
- Please – S’il vous plaît
- Thank you – Merci
- Restroom – Toilettes
- Where is… – Où est…
You will find that most everyone will reply to you in English if you at least try to speak in French first (and even if you don’t try to use French). It is very appreciated that you put forth the slightest effort. Especially in Paris and other larger cities that are accustomed to interacting with a lot of tourists, they will often reply in English because they are happy to accommodate you knowing French isn’t your native tongue.
Besides just the politeness of it, it’s FUN! Enjoy being in a foreign atmosphere and soak up everything you can – the good, the fun and the uncomfortable. They make for fun stories to tell when you get home! Our adventures and experiences are what makes life enjoyable and interesting, right? Enjoy the ride! 🙂

Allons faire un tour…
